Well we’re still all here waiting for the Hurricane Gordon
(only Cat. 1, though) to hit New Orleans. We drove into the city and port area
this morning and managed to be there in time for a paddle-steamer cruise down
the Mississippi. We weren’t sure if things would still be up and running today
due to the storm but all was good. Schools finished early and retail businesses
were told to close up shops at 4PM. We had a lovely 2 hour cruise and the
weather was pretty good, with only a few spots of rain. Our cruise included
lunch which had a creole flavour to it. We were also entertained by a jazz
group playing and also had interesting commentary for most of the tour. After
this we walked around the main tourist area of New Orleans and visited the
tourist information centre. The lady there was very helpful and again reassured
us that the storm would just be a small one. Once the shops and restaurants started
to close up we knew it was time to return to our accommodation. The TV is
saying the storm is slowing down and may not hit New Orleans until quite late
tonight. We haven’t planned much for tomorrow and will just play things by ear.
Schools here will be closed and a “State of Emergency” has been declared.
