Just an update on dinner at the Acme Oyster restaurant, it
was magnificent. Rob and Heather shared a dozen oyster as an appetiser and Paul
and I had shrimp and a plate of fries covered with pulled beef, cheese and a
delicious gravy. After dinner we wondered down the famous Bourbon Street which is
closed to traffic in the evenings. The streets were alive with colourful bars,
restaurants, live bands, eclectic shops selling everything… including lots of “voo-doo”
stuff. This morning we returned to this
area of the French Quarter. Rob and I decided we wanted to do part of the
history walk and we enjoyed looking at the many interesting buildings. The architecture
was intriguing and I loved all the colourful buildings we saw. Following this
we drove for about 40 minutes to join a swamp boat tour. On the way to the tour
the heavens opened and it poured. There was quite a bit of thunder and lightning
too but our tour went ahead. We saw many alligators of various sizes, large
turtles, fish, birds and even some racoons. The swamp and bayou area was quite
beautiful and the rain had eased off. Luckily we had a covered boat. Our guide
told us that the rivers and water levels in the swamp was the highest it had
been all year as a result of the rain from Hurricane Gordon. Once we returned
back to town it poured again! It was some of the heaviest, tropical rain we have
experienced but it didn’t last too long and we dried off pretty quickly in the
heat.
