We said goodbye to our interesting host, Angela and hit the
road reasonably early. We had been warned that it was a long weekend in Canada
and we would be travelling with thousands of Canadians who were heading over
the border to the USA for a short break. Things went very smoothly until we hit
Peace Bridge and there we spent quite a long time in the line of traffic trying
to get back into the USA. We had no trouble doing this, it just took some time
and patience which we have learnt to have. Angela had recommended that if we
had time today, we should call into the “Finger Lakes” district. A group of
lakes formed by glaciers 10,000 years ago. We navigated our way to Seneca Lake and
enjoyed lunching here and watching the holiday makers swimming in the calm,
clear waters. We laughed at the “Life-guard” sitting up high in his chair with
his loud hailer watching the swimmers. It was such an “American” thing.
Following lunch we continued our drive on towards our Airbnb for the night
passing some more of the “Finger Lakes” and stopping at a magnificent water-fall
called “Taughannock Falls”. The gorge was quite spectacular. We continued
driving and arrived at our lovely rural accommodation at a spot called South
Vestal. We are staying in a comfortable 2 bedroom basement apartment with all
facilities. The owner, Varam, lives in the house above us. He told us that you
can sometimes see bears and other wildlife on this property so Heather and I
went looking for some. Well…. all we saw were thousands of insects, a lovely
pond surrounded by a bog and I managed to get stung by something…..no bears!
