Today we drove out to Lancaster County to visit some of the
smaller towns and hopefully see a few of the beautiful farms and the Amish
people. Our first stop was at the town of Bird in the Hand. Here we visited a
huge market that had a variety of gifts, some made by the local Amish people.
Heather and I were particularly interested in the patch-work quilts. After this
visit we decided it was time for lunch and we headed for a place called
“Millers Smorgasbord Restaurant” which had been recommended to us. The food was
wonderful home cooking and could not be faulted. The restaurant overlooked an
Amish Farm so we were able to watch the horses playing around in the fields
while we enjoyed lunch. There were several shops close to the restaurant so
following lunch we visited another Quilting Shop. The boys were entertained by
several ladies in the shop one of whom had an Australian friend who lived at
Encounter Bay. Rob learnt about the etiquette when trying to deal with the
Amish buggies on the roads. He needed this because we were to encounter quite a
few over the next couple of hours. Both of the boys said we had to visit the
town of “Intercourse” for obvious reasons! We are glad we did because in the
town we found the Kitchen Kettle Village. There were over 40 unique shops
selling many different things and many were made by the Amish community. We
watched two young Amish women trying to make a horse with a buggy attached, back
up. The horse just refused so after about 20 minutes they unhitched the buggy
and pushed it back! We returned back to our beautiful accommodation and enjoyed
a BBQ dinner cooked by the boys, on a “grill”.
