After a later start than normal we headed into the city centre
and downtown Jacksonville. It is the largest city in Florida. It was around
9.30am and we were surprised as the streets were very quiet and this made touring
around easy. We looked at a few of the buildings and then drove down and parked
near the riverside. Rob was pretty excited because there were so many bridges
everywhere. We went for a pleasant walk along the Riverbank. The temperature
was rising as was the humidity so we thought we would drive to the beach and
have a swim (maybe). We drove to Atlantic Beach and were very lucky to score a
park. This area was lovely, with long stretches of beaches used mainly by the
people who live or rent some of the beautiful beachside homes. Parking for outsiders
was very limited. We talked to a local before we went to the beach and he suggested
a spot for lunch! He said that we just had to go there. We all had a
magnificent swim in the Atlantic Ocean on this beautiful beach which stretched
for miles. Every so often there was a life-guard sitting high in a chair close
to the water. We spent quite a bit of time here and then headed to “Safe
Harbour Seafood Restaurant for lunch. We loved all of our seafood dishes and
were very glad that this busy but wonderful spot was recommended to us.
