Day 44 11/8 Saturday “Country Roads take me….not home”

See if you can find some familiar song lyrics….A wonderful day in West Virginia. We had been told by our host that there were some wonderful caves and caverns filled with stalactites and stalagmites a couple of hours drive from Washington and as the city train services were going to be limited today we decided that a tour out in the country would be a great idea. We headed towards the caves and our journey took us through the small town of Sandy Hook where the tragic mass shootings occurred in 2012. From here we passed a sign to the Shenandoah National Park and River. Very pretty country scenery of green rolling hills and rivers, streams and beautiful trees. We weren’t surprised when we arrived at Luray Caverns to see crowds of people, being a Saturday, middle of Summer holidays and a warm day. We lined up for tickets and found out that today was also a special celebration for the caverns as they were celebrating 140 years since the discovery of the caverns. Parts of the caves were going to be lit by candle-light and there were to be fireworks later, in the evening. Well the caverns/caves were spectacular. We walked along a path for over 2 kms and were very impressed with everything we saw. An amazing place. Bigger than any we have seen in Australia. The Americans certainly do things differently. We followed a large paved path through the caves and in some places there were signs attached to the stalactites! Also in the 1950’s a man had decided that it was a great idea to put an organ in the cave and link different stalactites depending on the tone they produced so the organ could be played…. After a great visit here our ticket also included a visit to the car museum. This was pretty impressive too. On our return trip we called into the Shenandoah National Park. We found a lookout which had spectacular views of the river with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. All in all a wonderful day out in the country.
