We decide to make an early get away from Augusta so we
could spend some time in the beautiful city of Savannah, located close to the
coast and on the banks of the Savannah River which empties out here into the
Atlantic Ocean. The drive to Savannah was relatively easy and we were able to
park the car close to the “Historic” part of the wharf. Many soldiers were
strolling along the banks of the river and there were markets and school bands
playing. It was extremely hot but this didn’t seem to worry anyone. This area
in Savannah was where many of the first paddle-steamer boats were built and was
also an area where many slaves were brought in and auctioned at the slave-markets.
It was a fascinating walk along the river bank for me with many historical
markers along a trail. At one point we had a huge container vessel being
escorted into the port by several tug boats and in front of it, tied up to the
dock was an old paddle-steamer that was going to take tourists out on the river
for a tour. From here we drove over several bridges and numerous islands to
Tybee Island. This island was where everyone headed on a hot day to swim at the
beach. It reminded us of the Gold Coast with many different sorts of
accommodation available. Being the last weekend before school goes back, the
beach was packed with people……wall to wall! Heather put her toes into the Atlantic
Ocean while the rest of us watched from the pier. We then travelled on to
Jacksonville and checked in to our next Airbnb…..I thought I’d do an update as
to all the places we have eaten. Most people here ask about what and where we have
eaten and then give us about a hundred suggestions as to well to eat. This is
the list so far…or what we can remember. Taco Bell, Red Lobster, New Moon CafĂ©,
7 Eleven, Tony’s No name Restaurant, McDonalds (only when we were desperate for
coffee), Vietnamese Po, Circle K, Jason’s Deli, Tex Mex, Jersey Mike’s Subs. We
still have a few more to check out! They love their food here.
