Before I do anything else I must correct an error in
yesterday’s blog. Some of you may have realised the mistake and we were very
thankful when one of our lovely Airbnb hosts contacted us to let us know. We
had seen a sign for Sandy Hook and then wondered if this was where the shooting
tragedy had occurred. We had “googled” it and thought it was but no. The school
involved was in Connecticut not Virginia even though there is a Sandy Hook in
Virginia. Confusion with names of places is something we have experienced just
a little on this trip. The other night we were all looking for a place called “Greenville”
where we were to return or rebook our hire car. There was quite a debate as to
which way would be the best way to get there until we realised that Heather and
I had been looking up Greenville in North Carolina and the boys had been
looking up Greenville in South Carolina! Anyway, today we had a wonderful day
driving from Washington to the town of Richmond. We took a long detour via the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel because we wanted to experience this amazing
structure of a 37km bridge with 2 tunnels in it to allow major shipping to pass
through. The bridge spans the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, The Hampton Roads
harbour and the mouths of the James and Elizabeth Rivers. It cost us $15 to
drive on/through this structure and once we made it to the other side we turned
around and drove back over it. It was quite a thrill. Following this we made our
way to Richmond, a lovely town in Virginia. We have beautiful accommodation and
later in the evening we drove into town for dinner. There had been a “Watermelon
Festival” on in the main part of town on which had ended prematurely due to a
very heavy thunderstorm. We were sorry we had missed it as it looked as though
it would have been a lot of fun.
