After a beautiful breakfast on the deck of our house, Sara
kindly offered to drive us into the centre of Philadelphia. We booked tickets
for the hop-on hop-off bus and also a free tour of the Independence Hall. We
enjoyed seeing all the important and historical sights of Philadelphia and
enjoyed the excellent commentary that was provided. Following this we had a
quick stop for lunch. Rob and I then went to one of the tallest buildings in
Philadelphia, One Liberty. We took the lift to the observation deck on the 52nd
floor and not only had wonderful views of all over Philadelphia but again had
excellent commentary from our guide. Our knowledge about William Penn, the Quakers
and the settling of Philadelphia area, the declaration of Independence,
Benjamin Franklin etc. was greatly increased. While we were doing this Heather
and Paul visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art and walked up the steps made
famous in the “Rocky” movie. (They may have run up the steps and punched the
air!)They also visited the Rodin Museum and The Franklin Institute. Rob and I
also visited the Comcast building and saw one of the largest TV screens in the
world. We then all did the free tour of the Independence Hall where so much
history was made. By this time of the day (5.00PM) we were all a little hot and
tired so we visited a great little bar close by and spent an hour or so having
a couple of drinks and chatting to the head bar-man. Our final activity for the
day was to visit the famous “Liberty Bell”. In the morning the queues to see
this were so long but by the time we visited we could walk in straight away so
it worked out extremely well for us. We returned home to enjoy a famous
Philadelphian “Cheesesteak” for tea.
