Once again we were driven through the beautiful countryside
to the small village of Bec Hellouin, described as being one of the most
beautiful villages in France. It certainly lived up to its reputation. While
there we visited the Benedictine monastery and went into the Abbey where a
service was being conducted which included Gregorian chant. Some of us
struggled to understand too much of it as both our understanding of Latin and
French is very limited. We stayed for a
few minutes, wandered around the grounds of the monastery and then found a
lovely little café for coffee. After a walk around the village we hopped back
into the vehicles and headed for Chateau “Champ de Bataille”. This Chateau was
both huge and spectacular. We opted to tour the incredible gardens which
stretched for several kilometres. Water features, fruit trees, topiary,
statues, swans….too difficult to describe it all so you need to look at the
photos if you’re interested. Unfortunately my brochure is all in French so I
can’t tell you a lot about the history of this chateau but I will check it out
in English later. We also had a delicious lunch at the two star Michelin
restaurant in the grounds of the chateau. Another amazing day in Normandy.
