We were greeted by bright sunshine this morning and were
all down to t-shirts and jeans while enjoying breakfast together. Our first
stop was at a volcano where we were able to walk around the rim and from there
we drove to a huge lava field and took a dirt track to view the interesting
lava formations. Our guide then found a
volcano that he was able to drive us right into and we were able to take photos
from the floor of the volcano. We then drove on to Snaefellsnes National park,
home to the Snaefellsjokull Glacier which sits on top of a 700,000 year old
volcano. It is famous for the starring role as the entrance to the Earth’s core
in Jules Verne’s 1864 novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Here we
visited Djupalonssandur and checked out the smooth basaltic pebble beach with
its strange lava formations. We drove onto the town of Arnarstapi and then went
for a magnificent scenic walk along the coastline enjoying the cliffs and rich
bird life. Our last stop for the day was another beautiful waterfall. You never
really tire of them. Unfortunately, Waterfall Gully in the Adelaide foothills
is just not going to cut it anymore!
