Our final day of touring started with a delicious breakfast
including pancakes. The previous night we had been treated to a magnificent
dinner consisting of soup, main course and dessert, cooked by the host. It
really was beautiful home style cooking which could not be faulted. Our guide
took us to a beach where we were able to observe many, many seals lolling about
on the beach, rocks and in the ocean. It was very special to see so many
different species of seals up close. From here we continued on to see the Lava
waterfall and the Children’s Waterfall. The Lava waterfall had water spilling
through and over rocky cliffs into a bright turquoise river. The Children’s
Waterfall was a short stroll along from this and consisted of a series of
rapids rushing through a canyon. Two very spectacular waterfalls to complete
our trip. Our next stop was a steamy and smelly one, Europe’s hottest and
highest flowing thermal spring. Much of the water is used in the surrounding
villages for heating, including the hothouses where lots of fruits and
vegetables are grown. From here we went to a bakery where all of us had a
wonderful lunch together. We returned to our guest house in Reykjavik and said
sad goodbyes to Kristjan, our wonderful and entertaining guide and also to the
rest of our fellow travellers. We had all got along so well and we really hope
to keep in touch with the lovely couple from the UK and the couple from
Australia as we had become firm friends.
