Day 3 Sun 1/7 Le Mont Saint-Michel

An early start to the day saw us on a local bus to take us to the stunning Mont Saint-Michel which was only about a 15 minute bus ride from Pontorson. We had been advised to get there early as it can be extremely busy and being a Sunday even more so! Mont Saint-Michel is a small island that is now connected with the mainland by a bridge but once could only be reached at low tide. It has a very ancient monastery on the top, built around the 8th century AD. Various business and buildings creating a small stone village, surround the monastery. We certainly got our fitness in for the day walking up the hundreds of stairs to tour the monastery and were not disappointed with what we saw. Arriving just as the monastery was opening was a brilliant move as when we were returning back to Pontorson around lunchtime, we saw many of the shuttle busses unloading hordes of people. We were able to do the tour in comfort with only a few other families around.
