We started the day with wet overcast weather and
unfortunately this stayed with us for most of the day. We drove to Dettifoss
waterfall and could hear it before we could see it. It is Europe’s mightiest
cascade and has 96,500 gallons of water through it per second. The falls are
100 metres wide with a 45 metre drop. A very impressive sight and one which we
will not forget about for a long time. From here we drove to Asbyrgi canyon, a
massive horseshoe shaped gorge formed by a glacial flood after the last ice-age
(8,000 years ago). After lunch the fog and wet weather seemed to have really set
in but we were still able to see and visit Lake Myvatn, a lake that once had a
volcano erupt under it creating some interesting craters and rock formations.
We completed our afternoon by visiting an area that was full of geo-thermal
activity that was being harnessed for power. We will return to this area
tomorrow as visibility was poor. Our final activity here was to have a soak in
the hot blue thermal waters of the Myvatn nature baths.
